'

Kelly P. Nestor MSN, ANP-BC, clinical instructor, 无码专区 College of Nursing has been chosen as one of seven recipients of the 2014 IBC Foundation Excellence in Geriatric Nursing Education and Practice Awards for exceptional innovation in teaching care of older adults, a key area of nursing education. She received the award at the National League for Nursing (NLN) IBC Foundation Workshop in Philadelphia on June 11, 2014 at IBC Headquarters.  The award was presented by Lorina Marshall-Blake, president of the IBC Foundation, and other members of the IBC Foundation Board of Directors.

Nestor adapted elements of tools from the NLN ACES (Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors) program which includes unfolding case studies for her primary care nurse practitioner students. In her summer 2013 graduate geriatric management course curriculum, she created an assignment around the case studies for the students to work through all of the materials and put together a perfect primary care plan for the medical management of complex elderly patients.

鈥淭he 鈥榮ilver tsunami鈥 is upon us and advancing the care of elderly patients by the nursing profession is paramount.  I knew that there were creative ways to engage graduate students,鈥 says Nestor. 鈥淲e utilize standardized patients as well as patient teaching associates and other mechanisms to absorb students in the care of older patients. The ACES unfolding case studies have been a tremendous addition to the curriculum.鈥 Nestor plans to incorporate dementia case studies in an upcoming course.
