Assistant Professors Christine M. Crumlish, PhD, CCRN, ACNS-BC and Catherine Todd Magel, EdD, RN, BC will be presented with the 2012 MEDSURG Nursing Research for Practice Writer鈥檚 Award at The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) 21st Annual Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah that takes place October 4-7, 2012. The purpose of this annual award is to recognize and promote excellence in medical-surgical nursing clinical scholarship. Their article, 鈥淧atient Education on Heart Attack Response: Is Rehearsal the Critical Factor in Knowledge Retention鈥 appeared in the November/December 2011 issue of MEDSURG Nursing in a segment, Research for Practice.

Their study focused on the recognition and immediate response to signs and symptoms of a heart attack, one of the most important topics of patient education in any setting. The findings in this study support the use of a one-to-one teaching model with rehearsal to facilitate learning and enhance patients鈥 and families鈥 ability to identify and quickly respond to symptoms of a heart attack.
