Dr. Brian Chaplin Joins Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Brian Chaplin, Assistant Professor, has joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as its newest full-time faculty member. With expertise in developing technologies that remediate pathogens and contaminants in water, Dr. Chaplin adds a new focus of environmental chemistry to the department鈥檚 suite of water research practices.

鈥淚t is a pleasure to join an engineering program that has a strong commitment to water and wastewater treatment research,鈥 says Dr. Chaplin. 鈥淲ater is one of our precious resources. As the population on our planet grows, we must develop novel methods to treat and reuse water. I look forward to applying my expertise in furthering the College鈥檚 teaching and research topics on water treatment and sustainability in engineering.鈥

A primary objective of Dr. Chaplin鈥檚 research is to develop novel electrochemical and catalytic technologies in a sustainable manner to help facilitate water reuse and reduce fossil fuel usage. He earned his bachelor of science degree in geological engineering and his master of science degree in civil engineering at the University of Minnesota. He then completed his doctoral work in environmental engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Most recently, Dr. Chaplin served as a research associate at the University of Arizona, where he began to be interested in water reuse issues.

This fall, Dr. Chaplin is teaching the junior environmental lab class. He is also working to establish an Environmental Chemistry and Analytical Laboratory for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
