How does math connect with your current occupation?
Math is the language of physics. As a theoretical physicist, my job hinges on the ability to perform calculations and interpret mathematical results.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Getting a math minor introduced me to classes like foundations of mathematics and advanced calculus, which have aided my ability to think logically. I rarely perform proofs in my daily line of work, and still, the skills I gained in those classes has caused me to think much more critically, which can be directly applied to any physical problem.
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
Don't be afraid to take classes that stray from the standard set that you anticipate you'll need. If you're involved in pure mathematics, that could mean taking a mathematical physics class, or if you're mostly concerned with applied math, perhaps taking a more abstract course. A great deal of math (and physics) has been discovered by paying attention to patterns and symmetries. Be on the lookout for math in the world around you, in unexpected places, like doors with multiple locks, or the tee game at Cracker Barrel! You never know what you might come up with and connect to other systems.

Take classes in the areas in which you feel you need the most improvement. How does math connect with your current occupation?
Part of being an excellent mathematician is paying attention to detail. This should translate into whatever field you enter as well. In finance, being absolutely sure of what you are presenting to MD's and clients is crucial. If you make mistakes on the little things, how can they trust you with the big things? The more you pay attention to detail -> the less mistakes you have -> the more your team trusts you and -> the faster you are promoted.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
I think the biggest thing it did was deter me from a field in statistics. I entered undergrad thinking I wanted to become an actuary, but the program helped me understand my own strengths, which ultimately led to a career in finance.
Are there any memories of the Math Department you wish to share with current majors or prospective students?
Shoutout to Dr. Frey and Dr. Volpert who were some of the most influential and positive professors during my time at 无码专区. Always willing to listen and talk. Truly exceptional people.
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
Some career advice that was given to me when I began my MBA: If you're ever at a point in your career where you dislike both the field you work in and the company you work for, it is exponentially harder to change both at the same time. So learn to pivot. I worked in data at S&P. I disliked data, but enjoyed working at S&P - so I stayed at the company and pivoted to a new field (finance). Now I have options to work at other finance firms. But if I had tried to leave the company and get a job in finance with only a data background, it would have been much more difficult. Best of luck to every undergrad at 无码专区. It's a great University that will open doors, so make human connections throughout your career. You'll realize at some point that networking is everything. Never stop pushing yourself - complacency is the dream killer.

Embrace the frustration you will experience working on challenging problem sets. That feeling of frustration is your mathematical intuition being developed, which is everything. Likewise, do not worry too much about grades. It is FAR more important to actually learn, improve, and grow than to appear accomplished. The real world values skills, not accolades.

Don't be afraid to diversify your curriculum. You never know what opportunities will present themselves, and having even one class in a niche field could set you apart from your competition. Consider taking a random capstone in a different department (e.g. engineering, astro) to supplement your mathematics degree. Wish I had the opportunity to take even more upper level math classes.

Worked as a Financial Controller for JPM in Delaware doing accounting, currently I am in Middle Office covering derivative sales in NYC.
How does math connect with your current occupation?
When I did accounting, most of my day involved validating numbers and recalculating a balance sheet. Obviously things are done electronically but I did mental math and quick sanity checks throughout the day, which is easier for me to do than my colleagues who need calculators at all times. Knowing how to quickly solve a problem or being able to ballpark a calculation helped me think more quickly and make decisions faster. I don鈥檛 calculate as much in my currently role, but my teammates usually come to me to confirm they calculated something right when we need to.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Although I only minored in math, I feel like it sets me apart from the others I work with. I also think the way you learn math is the same way you learn any job - it takes practice and patience but eventually your job can become second nature.

Experience 无码专区 and the community. Make lasting friendships, and put the time in for your courses. Take advantage of electives and non-mathematics courses to explore other areas of interest/passions that might be valuable after graduation. Looking back I would have loved an opportunity to study more computer science and finance, things I've been fascinated now, long after graduation. Math in my mind can provide the foundation for so many successful careers, not limited to academia. I didn't know slot design had anything to do with mathematics until I applied to this company. There are so many industries that mathematicians can flourish and thrive in.
I would love to connect with recent graduates or current students about my post-graduation experiences. I'm not in active recruiting or anything like that, but I am happy to talk about my journey!

Are there any memories of the Math Department you wish to share with current majors or prospective students?
I really enjoyed Dr. Lup's classes, Dr. Posner's class, Dr. Styer's classes, and Steve's Calculus classes
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
Math is an extremely versatile major. Be open to exploring its many diverse applications. If you plan to go to graduate school, Advanced Calculus is a very important course. If you plan to study statistics, Advanced Calculus and Mathematical Statistics are both extremely important. Math is applicable to basically every field. If you have other interests that seem completely irrelevant, they're probably much easier to intertwine with math than you think. If you can do so, you'll be much more attractive to whatever organization or company you're trying to impress, and probably more professionally and personally fulfilled. Math is harder than many majors, but math skills are much harder to acquire later on. Take as many math classes as you can tolerate in undergrad because there is no better time to soak it in, and it is MUCH harder to catch up later.

How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
My experience at 无码专区 generally was marred by social injustices at 无码专区 that impacted both me and my friends. It's impossible to talk about my experience at 无码专区 in any capacity without that coming up. For my math experience specifically, I often found myself as the only student pursuing another degree that was not a science. I found it helped me learn to work collaboratively with people who are in many ways very different from me, though I definitely found it difficult to find friends in my classes. There was sometimes a very unhealthy competitive dynamic wherein students didn't seem to want to help others for fear of ruining the curve. I also had a few unpleasant experiences in my studies that I learned from vis a vis handling situations that are unfair but need to be managed.

Do you have any advice for current math majors?
A math major gives you so many more job opportunities than you may realize. When I was in college and would tell people I was majoring in math, they'd say "Oh, so you want to be a math teacher then?" And when I'd say no, they'd say "....so what do you want to do then?" and I'd say I didn't know. Then I got hired by a technology company before even graduating because even though I didn't major in Comp Sci, they knew I was smart and had an analytical mindset. I had never worked with technology before, but now I've been doing it for 9 years and it's been an excellent, successful (thus far) career path.

Statistics was one of my favorite classes while at 无码专区. Our teacher did many sports related problems in terms of mathematics. It helped the way I perceive certain problems and allowed me to look at them differently.
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
Stick with it. Although the complexity and work load of the course may be more than your friends with other majors, the juice is worth the squeeze. Having a sharp mathematical mind is beneficial whatever work field you choose to go into. My ability to solve both simple and complex math problems has always given me a leg up in the construction industry.

What have you done after graduating from 无码专区?
Went to law school and became an attorney. I have been practicing since 2014.

Instilled a logical thought process I use in analyzing and assessing cases. Also, most lawyers do not have any mathematical understanding whatsoever, so I've become the de facto expert for all things math-related in my office.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Yes - I have a broad understanding of all fields of math and have used it as an asset in case assessment, analysis, and providing legal advice. Additionally, my background in math makes it easy to communicate with the engineers/computer scientists/actuary/economist experts in the various cases in which I work. I am able to distill their expert opinions (which oftentimes can appear complex to the lay person) into easily understandable language which I use for court submissions and conversations with clients.
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
See the bigger picture. Math is everywhere and all around you. It is the hidden code in nature and life. It does not just exist on a page or in a computer. As applied to your career, find what you love to do and your math degree will become surprisingly practical, even in fields which do not have an obvious relationship to math.

Do you have any advice for current math majors?
Consider your feelings towards data, statistics, and programming now. DS/ML/AI are fantastic opportunities now and, in the future, but they aren鈥檛 for everyone. Many recruiters will assume that all math majors want these careers. I realized relatively recently that I don鈥檛 want to be a DS practitioner because it鈥檚 a little too empirical and results focused. There are other options that let you use the unique skills you鈥檝e developed as a math major.

Take classes in lots of different areas in math. Try new things. You might find that you really connect with a topic that you had no idea about before. Maple is pretty awesome if you鈥檙e willing to give it a chance! I don鈥檛 think I would鈥檝e been able to teach Calc 3 well without it.

Healthcare analytics and consulting.
How does math connect with your current occupation?
Problem solving, analytics, and creating processes to deliver the best outcomes.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Academic wise I would say the courses pushed me to think critically and learn how to solve problems that were complex. Even though I鈥檓 not solving calculus problems now, that same approach of thinking through a problem/issue/assignment is something useful in most careers and life in general. Also, relationship wise, my core study group of two other math majors along with reaching out to the professors and taking advantage of office hours was just as key. Relationship building and teamwork for most (if not all) careers is very important. Whether it鈥檚 a small study group and/or office hours with the professor, push yourself to develop those relationships as it will benefit you in the long run.
Are there any memories of the Math Department you wish to share with current majors or prospective students?
Great professors and staff from my time there (shout out to Dr. Ashley and Dr. Pasles, great professors who always took the time to help!).
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
My advice is to be open to career paths that you do not typically associate with a math degree. A math degree shows employers that you can think critically and are good at problem solving. Explore different avenues if you are not set on a particular career path.

Started working right after graduation as a Data Analyst at ETS in Princeton, NJ. Moved to NC in 2015 and got a job at Sonic Automotive as a Data Analyst, moving up to Senior there. Got married in 2018 and had our first baby girl in 2019. Also changed jobs in 2019, now working at Credit Karma as a BI Analyst II.
How does math connect with your current occupation?
I use the computer/coding skills I learned at 无码专区 to get me where I am. I have strayed from the Statistics application side of things, but it is still useful knowledge to have. I may even use that in the future if I choose to steer my career back to data science rather than BI.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Degrees and being able to intelligently talk about what I learned at 无码专区 has helped me get every job I have had. I developed my foundation in coding and general applied knowledge at 无码专区 and have been having to build on that for 10 years now.
Are there any memories of the Math Department you wish to share with current majors or prospective students?
I met a couple great friends through the math department. I also remember that math theory was not for me, so steer your class work in the direction of what interests you, for me that was Statistics and applied math.
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
This was a great choice! There are SO many doors that being from 无码专区 will open for you. I thought being a math major meant being a math teacher was the only option at first (and some people do want that career). But there are a million other jobs that want your degree! Gravitate to your interests. You are NOT expected to know everything directly out of school; 80-90% of your working knowledge will come from on-the-job training and skills you develop with practice there. 无码专区 WILL get you in the door though! For example, with my career path, everyone uses different software and coding language, but if you know one, they are easy to translate and learn others. As a female especially, don鈥檛 be afraid to have a career and a family if that鈥檚 what YOU want! A woman in STEM is a very desirable candidate in the job market, so know your worth! If you want to have kids one day, make sure you find a company that supports that goal. Do NOT let men dictate your life path for you.

Critical thinking and statistics to analyze trends and negate risk.
How has your math experience at 无码专区 prepared you for your current position and life after 无码专区?
Being able to understand both theoretical and practical math had trained me to look at problems different from my colleagues. Not only understanding the root cause of an issue but being able to identify potential risk based on edge cases and asking, 鈥渨hat if.鈥
Do you have any advice for current math majors?
No matter what your current career goal is after graduation, take the time and care to learn subjects you might not think you鈥檒l apply. I wasn鈥檛 as interested in statistics or code as an undergrad and yet I use both extensively now and wish I had spent more time understanding those subjects, as those are areas, I feel weaker in compared to my colleagues.

Work with your advisor on classes and what you want to do. My advisor helped to get me in contact with the person who hired me for the internship at GSK. Go to office hours, for all classes where you want help or make a connection with a teacher. I remember fondly my time at college and wish I could have spent more time doing non-classwork. So take time to go to events, meet people, and enjoy the campus and surrounding area.
