Lawyers and judges played important roles in 20th century America’s civil rights era, but many such stories have been lost to history. One tragic event in 1946 had a particularly significant impact.
On Monday, October 24, join United States District Judge Richard Gergel (D. S.C.) as he discusses this event and his book Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring.
Unexampled Courage explores the impact of the blinding of Sergeant Isaac Woodard, an African American veteran, and the subsequent racial awakening of President Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring. Gergel traces their influential roles in changing the course of America’s civil rights history, including both Briggs v. Elliott and Brown v. Board of Education.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to read Unexampled Courage and join a faculty-led discussion group prior to Judge Gergel’s visit to the law school which will take place the week of October 17. Complimentary copies of the book are available. To receive your copy courtesy of the Girard-diCarlo Center, please sign up for a discussion session. Refreshments will be served during the discussion groups.
That evening, the ÎÞÂëרÇø Law Alumni Association will host a CLE event with Judge Gergel at Troutman Pepper in Philadelphia. is separate from the law school event.
This event is presented by the David F. and Constance B. Girard-diCarlo Center for Ethics, Integrity and Compliance at ÎÞÂëרÇø Charles Widger School of Law. Additional funding provided by the Charles Koch Foundation.Ìý
