ECONOMICS
Economics majors who wish to study overseas should begin the advising process as early as possible in order to determine the proper sequencing of courses to ensure they can include a summer or semester abroad into their plans. It should be noted that students must meet prerequisite requirements for their overseas institution.
Tell your academic advisor that you are interested in study abroad at each registration appointment. Together, identify the best terms to go abroad, based on the courses in your four-year-plan. Some things to consider for ECA majors:
- Economics courses are fairly abundant abroad. Consider courses that focus on your host-country and region.
- ECO 1001 and ECO 1002 should be taken at VU prior to studying abroad.
- ECO will allow two courses toward their major requirement; one course towards minor.
- ECO 3137, ECO 2101 and ECO 2102 are generally not permitted to be taken abroad unless offered at institutions of prestige. It must be assumed that, unless approved, these courses be taken at VU.
Search the OEA Course Approval History database to select from more than 3,000 study abroad courses that have already been pre-approved for liberal education requirements and a growing list of technical courses.
The Course Approval History database is not exhaustive and students can work with an OEA advisor to submit additional courses for review.

Study abroad opportunities are not limited to formal instruction. Consider taking advantage of the unique research, internship, and fieldwork opportunities available in different regions of the world. This not only expands your personal and professional network, but gives you critical intercultural skills as well as direct hands-on experience.

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a ÎÞÂëרÇø or program application deadlines.
There are many study abroad scholarships available for students through ÎÞÂëרÇø, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
