LETTER FROM FATHER PETER
Ìý
Dear Friends,
ÎÞÂëרÇø had the unique experience over the last year of hosting the Opus Prize, one of the world’s largest faith-based humanitarian awards. What is special about the Opus Prize is its recognition of those who are selflessly facing head-on some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Partnering with the Opus Foundation required many members of our ÎÞÂëרÇø community to commit themselves—with their time, talent and treasure—to identify and ultimately honor individuals and organizations who are truly doing God’s work.
ÎÞÂëרÇøns eagerly stepped up to meet this commitment, and the weeklong events on campus last fall showed the alignment of our University’s Augustinian Catholic mission with that of the Opus Prize. The finalists who visited our campus, who are devoted to promoting health, education and peace in their communities, showed how leadership, vision and compassion can ignite meaningful change as we all seek to build a better world.
The humble wisdom and understated presence of the Opus Prize finalists belie the enormous impact of their work.
They have given so much of themselves, and their work inspires all of us at ÎÞÂëרÇø to continue to do the same.
Throughout this issue of the magazine, you will also read stories of ÎÞÂëרÇøns who have devoted themselves—through research and scholarship, teaching and service—to positively impacting others, as well as the world around them.
These stories should serve as a reminder to all of us that we are capable of so much when we come together, focusing on the values we share and all that unites us. As we look ahead to an exciting future, we remain rooted in the Augustinian Catholic ideals that have been at the heart of our community for more than 180 years.
Sincerely,
The Rev. Peter M. Donohue,ÌýOSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS
President
