The Late Hon. Kevin J. Carey '79 (Ret.)
Senior Counsel, Hogan Lovells

The late Judge Carey (1954-2024) was appointed as a dean's distinguished fellow in 2023. During his career, he served as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2005, when he was appointed to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware. During that time, he authored more than 200 reported decisions, issued important rulings on key issues such as valuation, fiduciary duties, and other complex Chapter 11 confirmation issues, and presided over high-profile cases, including Exide Technologies, Tribune Co., and New Century Financial.

Judge Carey joined Hogan Lovells following his time on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Delaware, where he earned a reputation as one of the nation's top bankruptcy judges. Having overseen cases worth billions of dollars with wide-ranging implications, he served as an important resource in both US restructurings and during multinational proceedings.听

At the time he joined 无码专区 as a dean's distinguished fellow, he was the immediate past president of the American Bankruptcy Institute and sat on the executive committee of the ABI Board of 听Directors. 听He was a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a member of the International Insolvency Institute, and was the first judge to serve as global chair of the Turnaround Management Association. He lectured worldwide on bankruptcy and cross-border issues and taught several bankruptcy-related university programs, including at St. John鈥檚 and Temple University. Judge Carey was also a contributing author to Collier on Bankruptcy, the leading treatise on U.S. bankruptcy law.

The Hon. Joel Slomsky
Senior United States District Judge, Eastern District of Pennsylvania

Judge Slomsky became a federal judge on October 8, 2008.听 He received his BA in 1967 from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and his JD in 1970 from New York Law School. Judge Slomsky was a Special Attorney with the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Philadelphia Strike Force from 1970-1973. From 1974 to October 2008, he was in private practice, primarily as a criminal defense attorney representing clients in state and federal court, before the grand jury, at trial and on appeal. While in private practice, Judge Slomsky was admitted to practice in many venues, from the Supreme Court of the United States to many Courts of Appeal and District Courts. He was a member of numerous Bar Associations and was a former member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Judge Slomsky has guest lectured at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple and Rutgers Law Schools.听While an editor of the听Philadelphia Lawyer Magazine, he wrote several articles covering topics such as money laundering, financial reporting crimes and the federal sentencing guidelines.
