Under President Calvin Coolidge鈥檚 leadership, the nation enjoyed unparalleled growth. The Eleanor H. McCullen Center for Law Religion and Public Policy welcomes New York Times best-selling author Amity Shlaes as she traces Coolidge鈥檚 improbable rise from a tiny town in New England to a youth so unpopular he was shut out of college fraternities at Amherst College through Massachusetts politics.
After a divisive period of government excess and corruption, Coolidge restored national trust in Washington and achieved what few other peace-time presidents have done: he left office with a smaller federal budget than he inherited. A man of calm discipline, he lived by example, renting half of a two-family house for his entire political career rather than compromising his political work by taking on debt. Renowned as a throwback, Coolidge was, in fact, strikingly modern鈥攁n advocate of women鈥檚 suffrage and a radio pioneer. Shlaes will deliver a fascinating talk about Coolidge, his life and what we can learn from his policies and philosophy.
